Setting up a business in Michigan

Businesses generally register with the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA). The filing process depends on whether the business is an LLC, corporation, partnership, or branch of a foreign company.

Foreign nationals and companies may own and operate Michigan entities, subject to applicable corporate, reporting, federal tax, and immigration requirements. Businesses typically also obtain an Employer Identification Number from the IRS.
